Irfan saaHib ne kamaal..e.mehrbaanee se mujh ko ijaazat dee hai k maiN iss silsile meiN apnee se koshish karooN. yeh muKhtasar mazmoon isee koshish kee amalee shakl hai. mujh ko yaqeen hai k iss mazmoon per aap ke, aur Khusoosan Irfan saaHeb ke, tabsaroN se ham munaasib nataa'ij aKhz kar sakeN ge. zer.e.nazar mazmoon mazkoora mas'ale per kisee soorat se bhee Harf.e.aaKhir kaa Hukm naheeN rakhtaa hai. yeh mere uss mutaa'lie kaa nichoR hai jo maiN ne Huroof ke dabne yaa girne per
kiyaa hai. az.raah.e.karam tanqeed.o.tabsara karne meiN buKhl se kaam na leejiye gaa. shukriya!

maiN to samjha tha k yeh saaniha aap ki jaanib se aek laGhzish ke mutraadif tha magar ab pataa chalaa k yeh ist'emaal aap ka deeda-daanista tha --- goya, aap ke zehn meiN, abhi bhi lafz sahiih aur lafz sahii ka ibhaam baraabar jaari-o-saari hai! maiN naheeN chaahata k yeh ibhaam aihd-e-mustaqbil meiN bhi chalta rahe, is liye yeh 'post' tehreer kar rahaa hooN. aur maiN yeh bhi naheeN chaahata k ham Khursheed Saahib ki dilkash Ghazal vaali laRii ko mazeed guNjlak kareN, is liye maiN aek nayee laRii eejaad kar rahaa hooN!

huzoor, ba-sad-ajz-o-inkesaar arz hai k lafz 'sahiih' Arabii ka hai aur (umooman) ADJECTIVE hu'aa karta hai --- meaning durust, precise, accurate, etc. haaN, kabhi-kabhaar ise NOUN ke taur par bhi barta jaata hai --- meaning, tasdeeq, authentication, etc.

bar-aks is ke, lafz 'sahii' Hindi ka hai aur umooman ba-taur ADVERB barta jaata hai --- na k ba-taur ADJECTIVE, jaisa k aap ne samajh rakkhaa tha!!!

yeh lafz muqaabiltan ziyaada vasee' hai aur kayee muKhtalif aNdaaz meiN kaam aata hai. maslan,

1. raNjish hi sahii, dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa!

goya, sahii = Yeah, O.K., maan liyaa k aisa hi hai, --- .

I had been reading an abridged version of Dagh's poetry these past two months. Today I came across this piece which in light of AGJH episodes could make for interesting reading. This is a list of maxims that Dagh must have considered as part and parcel of better urdu poetry.

ALUP post by Roshan Kamath about rules of thumb for variations in words, in context of meter of a ghazal

Since I was twiddling my thumbs anyway in Bombay (nearing the end of my vacation) I thought I'll list down in response the four "rules" of urdU scansion that I have internalized over these years. Note that these are just some rules-of-thumb that I employ - motivated mostly by syllabic placements and observations of popular pronounciation. Obviously, these are not an expert's comments - and are not intended as such. I'm pretty certain there are exceptions to each rule that I'm yet in the dark about; nevertheless, I thought these heuristics are sufficiently robust that I could share it with the rest of the group

If someone finds something incorrect - or has a better generalization then please do feel free to correct me. It will help improve my understanding of urdU metre. [Capital vowel letters indicate long vowels, while the corresponding lower case letters indicate short ones. For vazn, L indicates long syllable, S indicates short]
