bahut maaNgii duaa lekin pareshaanii nahiiN jaatii
Khudaayaa! kyoN balaaoN kii firaavaanii nahiiN jaatii?

Gham-o-hirmaaN haiN, ranj-o-dard haiN, armaan-o-hasrat haiN
dil-e-barbaad! phir bhii terii veeraanii nahiiN jaatii

muhabbat baais-e-takleef hai, vajh-e-halaakat hai
ye sachchii baat hai, aksar magar maanii nahiiN jaatii

Gham-e-jaanaaN ne kis darjaa tiraa chehraa bigaaRaa hai
mareez-e-ishq! terii laash pehchaanii nahiiN jaatii

javaaN.mardo! tumhaarii shaan hai mushkil se bhiR jaanaa
tumhaare dil se kyoN ye hubb-e-aasaanii nahiiN jaatii?

In Hindi, priya (beloved) appears in its original meaning. It has not developed the associated meaning of free and peaceful. Indira Gandhi’s middle name was priyadarshani (of beloved or pleasing appearance) and her grand-daughter is today called priyanka (with a beloved mark). Pleasing is an associated meaning. Prem (love) is clearly the most used word in Hindi films.

The beloved in Sanskrit was priya. Through usage the “r” in it got dropped and today you have piya doing service as lover in Hindi and Urdu. Urdu word piyar (love) is clearly a variant expression.

In Russian, the “pri” root is alive and well and means pleasant as in priyatna. But the word for friend in Russian is drug (pronounced droog) which means the other and points to the other close one. In Pakistan after 1947 prem (love) was abandoned for Arabic muhabbat from the root “hbb” meaning that which stays put. A sense of loyalty and permanence is implied. *
